New National Elevator Registry in Greece

What Every Building Owner Must Do by November 2025

Greece has launched a National Elevator Registry (Μητρώο Ανελκυστήρων) requiring all elevators – new and existing – to be formally registered by 30 November 2025. This regulation aims to enable the relevant governmental supervisory bodies to obtain a complete overview of the current status of elevators nationwide.

Why this matters: registration, certification, modernization

Many elevators in Greece are decades old, operating under varying safety conditions. The registry helps identify units needing modernization, aligning Greece with European standards (EN 81-20/50). Registered elevators are prioritized for inspection, certification, and eventual subsidy programs for safety upgrades. The registry is mandatory. Every elevator must be entered into the system via gov.gr with Taxisnet credentials. During the registration period, administrative fines are suspended. Required registration data include: installation address and location, number of stops, year of installation, active certifications, elevator owner/manager, maintenance company or installer. After registration closes, the data will guide future certification checks and modernization plans for elevators that don’t meet safety standards.

Risks of noncompliance

Elevators not registered by the deadline may be subject to fines or administrative sanctions. In some cases, operation may be suspended until compliance is achieved. Older elevators with serious safety deficiencies may need costly upgrades or retrofitting to obtain certification. During the rush near deadlines, inspection providers and certifying bodies may be overwhelmed, causing delays.
